COAL-TO-LIQUIDS
COALITION SALUTES CHAIRMAN BOUCHER, REP. SHIMKUS FOR ADVANCING CTL
LEGISLATION
Washington, D.C. – The
Coal-to-Liquids Coalition (CTLC), a broad coalition of energy producers,
consumers, developers and labor unions, today praised House Energy and Air
Quality Subcommittee Chairman Rick Boucher (D-Va.) and Rep. John Shimkus
(R-Ill.) for introducing legislation designed to foster the domestic
production of ultra-clean coal-to-liquid (CTL) transportation fuels.
The “Coal-to-Liquid Fuel
Act” seeks to stimulate the development of a viable domestic CTL
fuels industry by setting floor and ceiling prices for CTL fuels based on
the price of a barrel of oil. By shielding domestic CTL producers
from foreign energy cartel price manipulation, undertaken with the express
intent to cripple a new source of domestic fuels, the bill will lessen U.S. dependence
on imported energy.
National Mining Association President
and CEO Kraig R. Naasz, on behalf of the CTLC, today said: “Chairman
Boucher and his colleagues have demonstrated true leadership in
strengthening the nation’s energy security with the introduction of
this bill to help jump-start a viable coal-to-liquids industry in the United
States. They understand that America’s
enormous storehouse of coal, the world’s largest, can provide an
important measure of freedom from the whims of foreign producers. They
understand that the coal resources, the conversion technology and the
know-how all exist today to make this a reality.”
Naasz said the incentives included in
this bi-partisan legislation will enable America to use its
domestic energy resources to offset its growing dependence on foreign
energy. “This bill will reassure investors that the creation of
a viable coal-to-liquids fuel industry in this country will not be held
hostage to a foreign energy cartel,” he said.
“The CTLC, which represents a
broad array of private and public interests, looks forward to working with Chairman
Boucher to make the promise of this bill a reality,” said Naasz.
