Coal-to-Liquids
Coalition urges Senate to embrace CTL fuels
Washington, D.C. – National
Mining Association (NMA) President and CEO Kraig R. Naasz, on behalf of the
Coal-to-Liquids Coalition, released the following statement today urging
members of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee to support
measures designed to promote the domestic production of ultra-clean
coal-to-liquid (CTL) transportation fuels. The committee held a
hearing today focused on CTL fuels.
“As millions of Americans
prepare for the Memorial Day weekend and the beginning of the summer driving
season, record-high gasoline prices will once again remind the nation of
the enormous costs associated with America’s
growing dependence on foreign energy. When the Senate returns from
its Memorial Day recess senators will have a chance to cast a vote in favor
of American energy independence by supporting efforts to add CTL provisions
to a sweeping energy bill (S. 1419) set for Senate floor action in early
June.
“Domestically produced CTL
fuels can significantly reduce our over-reliance on oil imported from
unfriendly and unstable regimes, provide our Armed Forces with a secure
source of affordable fuels, help reduce our burgeoning trade deficit and
create thousands of new jobs.
“CTL fuels can do all of this
and they can do it cleanly. A recent study conducted by the Department
of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL) documents the
environmental profile of CTL fuels that will be produced at a CTL plant
being built in Wellsville, Ohio, by CTLC
member Baard Energy, L.L.C. The study conclusively shows that the advanced
technology Baard will use to produce CTL fuels will reduce carbon dioxide
emissions by almost half compared to those of conventional diesel fuel,
while emitting substantially less regulated pollutants than low-sulfur
diesel.
“The energy producers, consumers
and labor unions that compromise the Coal-to-Liquids Coalition urge the Senate
Energy and Natural Resources Committee and all members of the Senate to put
America on a path to
true energy dependence powered by CTL fuels.”

Laboratory study, is available at www.futurecoalfuels.org.
