Coal-to-Liquids Coalition details CTL environmental gains, urges Senate support
Washington, D.C. - National Mining Association (NMA) President and CEO Kraig R. Naasz, on behalf of the Coal-to-Liquids Coalition, released the following statement today in response to allegations regarding coal-to liquid (CTL) fuels made by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC):
"America faces the worrying prospect of becoming ever more reliant on increasingly expensive imported oil unless immediate steps are taken to jumpstart the domestic production of ultra-clean CTL fuels. Unfortunately, organizations such as NRDC would deny America the chance to move towards true energy independence by inaccurately portraying the environmental characteristics of CTL fuels.
"CTL fuels are clean. Of that there is no doubt. A 2001 study by the Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) found that CTL diesel fuels will emit less carbon dioxide than the fuels they replace. In addition, CTL fuels will significantly reduce emissions of harmful pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate matter.
"Domestically produced CTL fuels can dramatically reduce oil imported from unfriendly and dangerous regimes, provide our Armed Forces with a secure source of affordable fuels, create thousands of new high-paying jobs and slash our growing trade deficit.
"It is for these reasons that the energy producers, consumers, technology developers and labor unions that joined forces to form the Coal-to-Liquids Coalition call on members of the Senate to ensure that a comprehensive energy bill set for floor consideration this week include provisions designed to aid the production of ultra-clean CTL fuels and the strengthening of U.S. energy security."
